Tamoxifen citrate is a selective oestrogen receptor modulator, or SERM. It blocks oestrogen from binding to receptors in breast tissue rather than lowering total oestrogen in the body. This is why it is the core drug in most post-cycle therapy plans and why it is also used to treat or prevent gynaecomastia.

A common PCT protocol runs 40mg daily for the first two weeks, then 20mg daily for a further two weeks, giving a four week course in total. For gynaecomastia prevention or treatment, 20mg daily is the typical dose. Tablets are taken at roughly the same time each day, with or without food, and this is general guidance rather than a prescription for your specific case.

The most commonly reported effects are hot flushes, nausea, and headaches. There is also a recognised increased risk of blood clots with SERM use, so anyone with a personal or family history of clotting issues should be especially cautious. Bloodwork covering testosterone, oestradiol, LH, FSH, and liver function before starting and again around four weeks after finishing PCT helps confirm your natural recovery is on track.

Tamoxifen is commonly used on its own for PCT and does not require other on-cycle support to do its job. Some users add Clomid alongside it for a more thorough recovery protocol after heavy or long cycles, and hCG is sometimes used before starting PCT to help restart natural testosterone production. Neither addition is mandatory, it depends on the cycle that preceded it.

Both are SERMs and both are used to restart natural hormone production after a cycle, but they act slightly differently across tissues and some users tolerate one better than the other. Tamoxifen tends to be favoured specifically for gynaecomastia control because of how strongly it blocks oestrogen receptors in breast tissue, while Clomid is often added for a broader hormonal recovery push. Many PCT plans use them together rather than choosing one over the other.
